I once heard someone say something about a busi-body in their church. They said, "Her tongue is so long and wicked she could sit in the living room and lick a spoon in the kitchen."
The Bible has much to say about the tongue. In the New Testament book of James, chapter 3, James says "For in many ways we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horse' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniguity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similtude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be."
Now, I don't know if your tongue is as long as the woman mentioned above, but the truth is our tongues can really get us into trouble. It can be a wicked and destructive tool that destroys people and lives.
My prayer for you and I today is this: "Lord, heal that hole under our nose!"
I pray that we engage our minds before we engage our mouths and if we have the mind of Christ, how much we will bless those around us ... rather than curse them.
We can even curse our children, our spouses, and other family members, without even listening to those harmful words coming out of our mouths.
We don't really want to do that, do we?
